Stoplight System to Indicate Overcrowding

Giving people the information they need to feel comfortable using stores and public space is absolutely essential, but an online reservation system does risk locking out people with limited computer skills. I'm thinking some sort of stoplight system (red = full, green = safe) on storefronts or light poles could let people see from a distance if a store or a block is getting too crowded.

Linking those lights to a dashboard... more »

Safe Payment Technology

I have a solution to one of the challenges of social distancing in businesses, specifically payments. My app not only supports social distancing and hygiene during payment, but can save struggling merchants hundreds of dollars every month in payment processing costs.

Stuypend is a mobile app that can be used to send payments for items in a store. Customers send payments to merchants using QR codes. Stuypend's QR codes... more »

Local Online Ordering

Today's consumers are online, and restaurants must meet customers where they are to survive. The problem is local restaurants lack expertise and resources to capture online orders affordably without sacrificing already slim margins.

One possible solution is a platform that enables local restaurants to directly capture online orders and strengthen customer relationships via message and voice-based interfaces like SMS... more »

Restaurant Social Media App

Hi everyone! I hope this message finds you well. Me and my partners have been working on a new food app that is basically as easy as using Instagram or Facebook! You create a user profile for your restaurant and you begin to post pictures like you would on Instagram or Facebook by taking a picture and sharing it to your profile. It can be also downloaded by customers and friends. Basically anyone can download it. We were... more »

Technology Training Utilizing YouTube

In order to address the concerns of businesses with limited technology and social media skills, YouTube could be utilized for training purposes. While it wouldn't be as personalized, it is free to access and already available. Perhaps a one pager could be created with links to the most helpful/relevant/easy videos and their associated topics.

Technology & Social Media Grants trending idea

Many businesses in this district do not have an online presence, which could have helped cushion the blow from the recent business shut downs. Technology assistance grants could be a viable solution here and should be easy to obtain, work around business limitations and schedules, and be separated into stand-alone classes so a business owner isn't required to attend multiple courses and can pick just those that would... more »

Our essential local businesses are our heroes and they have suffered devastating losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A volunteer effort led by the East Village Community Coalition (EVCC) along with East Village residents Paul Gale and Perry Leung created an interactive map of open businesses across the neighborhood during the COVID-19 crisis to provide a service to the East Village community and to help sustain our... more »

Curbside Waste Management trending idea

The sight and smell of trash and recycling piles is ubiquitous on NYC streetscapes. It not only creates a visual eyesore and attracts rodents, but it also poses a physical obstacle for pedestrians and sidewalk users. While sidewalk space was at a premium prior to the pandemic, high quality public realm is even more critical now for social distancing, safe movement and outdoor business operations. Businesses that rely... more »

Connecting cultural organizations & artists to managers of public space

COVID has wreaked havoc on so many sectors of society but in particular, it has hit the arts community extremely hard. Theaters and cultural spaces will be the last to reopen and because all events have had to be cancelled, artists have lost much of their livelihoods. A recent report by SMU DataArts prepared for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, specifies that arts nonprofits in New York have lost a half... more »

Boosting neighbourhood businesses using a local currency and incentive scheme

Even before the arrival of COVID-19, local neighbourhood businesses, like our mama & papa stores, were trying to keep their heads above water, struggling to survive the impossible competition from global online corporations.

No longer spending our hard-earned wages and salaries locally, our money is transferred out of our neighbourhoods and city, often out of the US. Money that should stay local by buying local, could,... more »

Expand the use of existing outdoor space to include daytime work and learning spaces

The neighborhood restaurants, cafes and bars that nourish our communities are struggling. Many have gone out of business, and many more teeter on the brink.

Outdoor dining has helped, but has not yet made up for all of the lost business.

At the same time, New Yorkers citywide are struggling with isolation, lack of connection and the negative impacts of social distancing. People need places to safely gather, work, learn... more »

In addition to requiring masks, limiting customers in store and enforcing social-distancing, another challenge businesses face as they reopen is assuring customers their stores are safely sanitized.
